The high court of Islamabad has banned to celebrate in the capital city of Pakistan Valentine’s Day, calling the celebration contrary to Muslim culture.
The court banned the festivals and other events held in honor of the holiday in public places or government institutions.
The media is also prohibited to advertise or to cover events related to the Valentine’s Day.
The court’s decision followed a petition in which it claimed that the celebration of Valentine’s Day is contrary to Islamic teachings.
According to the newspaper The Dawn, the petition States that the festivals in honor of Valentine’s Day “lead to the spread of immoral attitudes and obscene behavior.”
The ban has not hit the shops and restaurants. According to AFP, some restaurants continue to advertise events.
In Pakistan, the holiday as a whole has become in recent years very popular. Particularly active Valentine’s Day is celebrated in major cities of the country. But many religious groups have spoken out against it.
A year ago, the President of the country mamnoon Hussain said that the celebration of Valentine’s Day are best avoided, as this holiday does not correspond to the culture of Pakistan.
In that year, in the city of Kohat was prohibited the sale of cards and holiday products by 14 February. In the city of Peshawar, was also banned the celebration. The authorities of both cities later stated that the prohibitions were ignored.
