The most unusual cases.
At the border most people associate with a border post, the neutral zone, border guards with dogs. And this, of course, in the vast majority of cases. But there are exceptions to the rule. In this review we will talk about the different buildings that the will of fate found themselves on the border and the inhabitants have to live actually in two countries at once.
1. House on the border of USA and Canada
This house is 650 square meters with thick granite walls, which is abandoned since 1950-ies, – hour protection as Canada and the United States.
Currently the house is divided in five apartments, located on a plot of four acres, which is situated on the border Beebe Plain, VT and Stansted, Quebec (Canada). Building neglected and its restoration to about 600,000 U.S. dollars. It sold over 109 000 dollars.
Known among the locals as the “Old stone store”, the house was built in 1782 by a merchant who wished to trade with farmers in Vermont and Quebec. The structure has entrances from both countries.
2. Post office – the border between the two States
Federal building Texarkana U.S. Post Office and Federal Building is located on the border between the U.S. States of Arkansas and Texas. It is used as a building, U.S. district court in the Western district of Arkansas and U.S. district court in the Eastern district of Texas.
The boundary between the States is exactly in the middle of the building, built in 1933, which is unique in that no other Federal building in the country sited in two States.
This building was listed on the national register of historic places in 2000.
3. A fence with Mexico to cross the sacred land of the indigenous tribes
The estimated border wall between the U.S. and Mexico goes right through the Holy places of the Indians, defiling them.
A controversial place located on the border of USA and Mexico about an hour’s drive South of Tucson. Tribe Tohono O odham that lives in the area, believes that their ancestor lived on the Holy hill – peak, Baboquivari. A wall that wants to build a President trump, have to cross this mountain range and pass on the sacred tomb.
4. The border between the States passes through the pool
The Cal Neva Lodge was built in 1926 and by 1930 the years, it has become a favorite destination of the rich and famous from California and Nevada. When this resort was owned by Frank Sinatra. Three years ago, the resort was closed for renovations, but the owners went bankrupt and the building was frozen. One of the pools the Cal Neva Lodge is remarkable that in the middle it forms the border between California and Nevada.
5. Farm on both sides of the Irish border
Farm of David Crockett is located in Derry / Londonderry, right on the dividing line between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland.
Since 1999, entered into force of the Belfast agreement, the 480-kilometer Irish border between North and South has actually been removed. David and his neighbors took advantage of the newfound world, establishing a thriving farm right on the former border.
But that may change soon. As Britain prepares to exit the European Union, the inhabitants of Derry, who overwhelmingly voted to remain in the EU, believe that the split will be devastating.
For David and his farm, big changes are coming when Northern Ireland will leave the EU. First, the two countries will apply different laws and taxes. Simply will be impossible to move the tractors the border. The farmer said that he would have to move all his business and buy new equipment.
6. The hotel is on the border between Switzerland and France
The hotel Arbez is located in the peaceful Alpine village of La cure, and this is the only hotel in the world located in two countries.
Located on the Franco-Swiss border, Arbez was originally a bar and a grocery store, which was built shortly before the entry into force of the border of Switzerland and France in 1862. It became a hotel in 1921. Today the hotel is popular among travelers who like to “stand with one foot in the one in France and another in Switzerland.”
The restaurant is divided into two parts — one serves Swiss food, and the other French.
7. Conference room- dividing line between North and South Korea
In the Korean demilitarized zone is the “blue” conference hall, UN-built, which is the dividing line between North and South Korea. Any day here still stands one of the North Korean soldiers looking at half a dozen South Korean soldiers look at him, and a number of tourists behind them.
8. The world’s largest energy Collider located on the border of Switzerland and France
CERN (European organization for nuclear research) manages the largest laboratory of particle physics in the world, located on the border between France and Switzerland.
The CERN laboratory is open for tourists, so during the tour you can accidentally cross the border.
