The national team of Ukraine on football for the first time, prematurely lost chances in the final stage of the world Cup.
On the eve of the team Andrey Shevchenko in Kiev at the NSC “Olympic” with a score 0:2 lost to Croatia and missed a chance in the play-offs to compete for a spot on the world Cup.
His first qualifying round for the world championship the national team of Ukraine held in 1998, in group with Germany, Portugal, Armenia, Northern Ireland and Albania scored 20 points (6-2-2) and suddenly took second place, leaving behind a formidable Portuguese. In the play-offs “blue-yellow” with a total score 1:3 lost to future bronze prize-winners of the world Cup to Croatia.
In qualification for the 2002 world Cup the Ukrainian team in the group with Poland, Belarus, Norway, Wales and Armenia took the second place (4-5-1) and again went to the play-offs, where no chances lost future Vice-world champion team Germany (1:1 and 1:4).
The 2006 world Cup – the most pleasant memory of fans of the Ukrainian team Oleg Blokhin became the first European team secured a place in the final stage of the German Championship. In the group with Turkey, Denmark, Greece, Albania, Georgia and Kazakhstan team
led by Andriy Shevchenko, scored 25 points (7-4-1). Next was a trip to Germany and a sensational breakthrough to the quarterfinals, where to stop Ukraine could only future world Champions, the Italians.
Qualified for the 2010 world Cup for Ukraine was held on already-established pattern – the second place in the group stage (21 points in games against England, Croatia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Andorra) and an unfortunate defeat against Greece in the play-offs (0:0 and 0:1).
Similarly, the Ukrainian team played in world Cup qualifiers 2014. In a group with England, Montenegro, Poland, Moldova and San Marino “blue-yellow” took the second place (6-3-1), and in the play-offs lost to France (2:0 and 0:3).
