When connoisseurs of terrible want to communicate with each other, one of the topics that pop up with alarming regularity, always getting “a genre in crisis.” Once again, I saw this a few days ago, looking at our horror forums, specifically here in this topic. Again, someone writes that the genre is in decline, nothing fresh and original it does not appear, and the percentage of poor and scary movies is too high.
And everything seems to be right, but my memory is (no offense) whining is starting to sound for the third or fourth time in the last 15-20 years. The crisis of the genre heard in the first half of the 1990s (not yet released “Scream” Wes Craven), at the beginning and at the end of the 2000s. More. Reading foreign blogs, I from time to time encountered there on this kind of grumbling. And if you dig history, you’ll find that in the West and went before this kind of talk – at the end of the 1980s, for example, when the slasher sub-genre slid into a solid samopovtory and parody.
Let’s discuss this topic. Do we have in the genre is really kind of a crisis? What can be the reason? Or there is no crisis – but then where periodically there are all these conversations? After all, almost every new generation of horror fans must pass through this: “familiarity and admiration for the genre – know – weariness and disappointment in the new film – the conclusion about the crisis of the genre”.
Personally I have the impression that no crisis of the question and never, in fact, was not. More precisely, the speech was, all of these conversations, but the soil under them and there was not. It seems to me that, as in any other genre, horror is a constant process, when each other are replaced by certain “trendy” topics, approaches, styles, subgenres. Some gain strength, others weaken and disappear. Approximately every 3-5 years comes a moment of “shift change”, where some of the topics bored the public, and other new (or well forgotten old) still do not have time to assert themselves. And here is the moment many fans mistakenly and mistaken for a crisis.
