Yeah, the Dark universe and really not so hot. A large-scale project, which with such fanfare told the world is in danger of dying after the first movie. Johnny Depp in the role of the invisible Man, Javier Bardem in the role of Frankenstein’s Monster, Dwayne Johnson in the role of the wolf Man – all these (and only these) big names may remain to be the daddy with the plans. And the plans will be mummified.
With the failure of “the Mummy” where it all started. Film Alex Kurtzman became Universal as the successful start of the universe, which at the time was “Iron man” of Marvel. “The mummy” has not attracted the audience, and the rental was not particularly impressive. The figures do not seem so bad: 409 million Fund with a budget of 125 million. But, first, they say that the real budget is much higher, and secondly, another 100 million spent on marketing.
In August there was talk that the Dark universe is moribund. Later came another sad news: the work on “Bride of Frankenstein” pending, even though the film was supposed to be next after “the Mummy”. And now the fledgling world of gods and monsters was left without leadership.
Producers-screenwriters Alex Kurtzman (the same Director of “the Mummy”) and Chris Morgan have left the Dark universe. These two were called “architects” of a new cinematic world, but, alas, did not happen. The Kurtzman, whose contract with Universal expired in September, is now focusing on work with CBS, where he has half a dozen different shows, including the new “Star Trek”. Morgan, in turn, returns to “fast and Furious”: it will write a spin-off of heroes Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statema.
And what about the “beheaded” of the universe? Of course, it can simply collapse. But Universal is still considering several options for recovery, for example, experienced and, importantly, the profile Directors and producers (already sounded the name of the ubiquitous Jason bloom). Movies reformatted the world of monsters will be able to give more freedom to the Directors and do not push them hard-bound to a shared universe. Sounds like reasonable.
