In December 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, which entered into force on 3 may 2008
Today, December 3, marks international day of persons with disabilities. This day originates from 1992. Then, the UN General Assembly, by its resolution No. 47/3, proclaimed 3 December as the International day of persons with disabilities with the aim of integrating people with disabilities into society.
In addition to the decree, the organization urged the member States of the UN every year to carry out various activities to commemorate this Day.
Later, in December 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, which entered into force on 3 may 2008.
Principles of the Convention are: respect for inherent dignity and individual autonomy; non-discrimination; full and effective participation and inclusion in society; respect for difference of persons with disabilities and their acceptance as a component of human diversity and of humanity; equality of opportunity; accessibility; equality between men and women; respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities and respect for the rights of children with disabilities to preserve their identities.
According to the UN, persons with disabilities are disproportionately represented among the poorest of the world’s population. In this regard, they lack equal access to basic resources such as education, employment, healthcare and social and legal support.
Therefore, the aim of the International day of persons with disabilities is the full and equal human rights and participation of people with disabilities in society.
