The US has offered Ukraine not to introduce its resolution on peacekeepers

The special representative of the Department of state invited the Ukrainian side to try to reach agreement in the framework of the Russian proposal.

The special representative of the US state Department in Ukraine Kurt Volker said that Washington has offered Kiev not to introduce a competing resolution on the UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbass in response to the Russian initiative and to try to reach agreement.

“Ukraine a few years ago brought the idea to deploy UN peacekeeping mission in Eastern Ukraine. At that time Russia was not ready to explore it. When Russia presented his idea in September, Ukraine was ready to come out with its own offer… We discussed this with the Ukraine and said, “let’s not put forward a competing resolution, let’s try to start a discussion about the principles that must do an effective peacekeeping mission. And see if we can reach agreement,” said Walker on 3 November at the briefing in Washington.

He informed that currently there are discussions on principles and elements of the UN mission.

“We are discussing the principles and elements that should be in a future resolution of the UN security Council. And if we can agree that would be the best way forward,” said Walker.

According to him, the USA in addition to Russia and Ukraine, discuss the issue with France and Germany as partners in the Normandy format, as well as the UK and Sweden, which are members of the UN security Council at the moment.

The US special envoy believes that the peacekeeping mission will be effective under condition of control over the entire territory of Donbass.

“We are trying to see whether it is possible to create the conditions for a (host − ed) UN peacekeeping forces to control territory in the East of Ukraine”, − said the diplomat.
