The U.S. Senate is ready to launch a new blow to Russia

Us senators have decided to tighten sanctions against Russia.

Senators from the Republican and Democratic parties agreed on tougher sanctions against Russia, which should be a response to the alleged Moscow’s intervention in U.S. elections, and its activity in the middle East.

This was reported to journalists by the Chairman of the Senate foreign relations Committee, Republican Bob Corker.

The bill includes a provision that the U.S. President must obtain the approval of Congress for any weakening of the sanctions regime against Russia. This would deprive the White house of the possibility to cancel the restrictive measures themselves.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the document, the details of which will be announced this week, also opens up the way for the introduction of additional sanctions on individual sectors of the Russian economy, including mining, transport.

According to the agreement of senators, the new restrictive measures can be imposed in respect of persons involved in nefarious activities in cybersphere.

The senators agreed to include new measures against Russia in a bill on sanctions against Iran, to speed up the process of adoption. This bill will be put to the vote this week.

Russia is accused by the authors of the bill in violation of human rights, arms transfers to the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad and intervention in the presidential election campaign in the United States. Sanctions in case of their adoption may relate to mining and metallurgical sectors of the Russian economy, as well as projects in the field of railway transport and shipbuilding, media reported.

“These additional sanctions will be a powerful signal from two parties of Russia and other countries that they will be punished if they try to interfere in our elections,” commented the inter-party agreement the democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer.

Experts say that the fact that the bill is a bipartisan, limits the ability of the White house to reject the document.
Earlier it was reported that the U.S. Senate is on the verge of a bipartisan deal to strengthen sanctions against Russia.

Recall that the US does not plan to repeal or weaken the sanctions against Russia and will support them until Moscow fully complied with its obligations to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
