The Spanish authorities expressed concern about increasing numbers to the island Gaztelugatxe in the Basque region of the country, where they filmed several scenes of the seventh season of “Game of thrones”.
As reported, on the island of Gaztelugatxe is the famous staircase of the residence of Dragonstone. For two months the place was visited by about 75 thousand tourists. Before filming, the island is not popular among tourists, and the main visitors were few Christian pilgrims who visited the small chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
Local authorities noted that such a flow of tourists could harm this place, and consider options to limit visits to the island.
The publication writes that this is not the first case when the popularity of the series harms the places where the film had been made. In 2016, a record influx of tourists was observed in the Croatian Dubrovnik, which became a prototype for king’s landing in “Game of thrones”. The mayor then stated that he intends to limit the number of visitors to the city in order to avoid unexpected situations.
