The scientists said what disorders can cause poor performance in school

Poor performance in school is fraught with dangerous consequences in the future. Scientists from the Karolinska Institute (Sweden) showed that those students have a higher risk of suicide in adult life. The study analyzed data on more than 26 000 women and men aged 16 to 46 years, with a special accent was made on the correlation between their school assessments with data on suicide attempts. “We found that the lower the level of school performance, the higher the risk of attempted suicide,” said Dr. Alma Norberg Wallin (Alma Sörberg Wallin), research fellow of research Department of public health Karolinska Institute. The risk of suicide was five times higher among adults whose school performance was lowest in comparison with those peers who studied well.

This correlation was equally strong for women and for men. Moreover, such factors as the social position of the student, mental illness or his parents ‘ immigrant experience had no significant effect on this correlation.
It is unclear what lies behind the relationship between low school grades, mental illness and suicide attempt.

One hypothesis is that the main reason may be a lower cognitive ability, as previous studies have shown that it is directly linked with school performance, and suicidal behavior. Therefore, the researchers added factors to the data of statistical control of IQ tests, performed at the age of 12 years. Nevertheless, they found no evidence of this hypothesis. On the contrary, they came to the conclusion that higher IQ correlates with a slightly higher risk of suicide attempts in women.

Researchers believe that the prevention of suicidal behavior need to do it in school.

“Our research has shown that school grades are important “risk marker” for future suicide attempts. This is good information for school teachers and those people who work to prevent mental illness students and the General population. Suicidal behaviour is a public health problem about which we need to know more, if we want to take effective measures,” concluded Dr. Wallin.

However, scientists emphasize that it is not yet known what kind of mechanism connects the lower scores with a higher risk of suicide attempts. It is possible that poor performance leads to restricted life opportunities in adulthood. On the other hand, there is a possibility that a bad rating indicate any other personal problems or qualities (impulsiveness, behavioral disorders, etc.) that contribute to suicidal behavior. This question will be the subject of further research.
