The scandal with the renaming in Odessa: the city Council gave the answer

The decision of the city Council have changed the names of a number of streets that are not subject to the law on decommunization.

This was stated today at the briefing Director of the legal Department of the Odessa city Council Inna Popovskaya to justify the legality of the decision on the renaming of several streets in Odessa, adopted by the deputies at yesterday’s session.

In particular, the official has commented on the fact of the beginning of criminal proceedings by the Prosecutor’s office of Odessa region concerning the city Council adopted the above decision.

“Today the procedure of opening criminal proceedings is performed in a declarative manner – regardless of whether there is a crime or not. So, to say that if the criminal proceedings are opened, someone has committed a criminal offence, today it is illogical and it is not true,” said Popovski.

According to the head of the legal Department, the decision of the city Council the renaming of streets is not contrary to the law on decommunization.

“The decision of the city Council changed the names of several streets that do not fall under the law on decommunization. For example, the prospect of the Heavenly hundred, which was renamed in accordance with the illegal disposal of ex-Governor that was not even backed by public hearings has already been renamed by the decision of the historical-topologicheskoj Committee of the Odessa city Council. Thus, this toponym was already,” said Popovski.

The official also said that the street of Valentina Tereshkova will also be renamed. I also suggest to consider the result of public hearings that will be held on this issue.

We will remind, security Service of Ukraine in Odessa region appealed to the mayor of Odessa Gennady Trukhanov, demanding to cancel adopted on 26 April the Odessa city Council’s decision to cancel the renaming of several streets and alleys of the regional center in the framework of de-communization.
