Chernobyl has completed acceptance testing of the new safe confinement. Said this yesterday, the European Bank for reconstruction and development (EBRD).

“The successful completion of the 72-hour trial operation of the facility on the eve of the 33-year anniversary of the accident in 1986, marks a safe physical completion of the new shelter erected over the destroyed building of the fourth unit of the Chernobyl NPP”, – stated in the message.

It is noted that the new safe confinement will prevent the release of radioactive materials into the environment and for a longer period will ensure the safety of dismantling of the old shelter and the destroyed reactor, as well as the removal and export of radioactive waste.

The construction of the new arches was carried out with the assistance of the Chernobyl Shelter Fund, established by EBRD.

“The construction project of a total value of over 2.1 billion euros, implemented on the Chernobyl NPP with the support of more than 45 donor countries, and funds the EBRD is the largest-scale example of international cooperation in the field of nuclear safety,” – said the EBRD.

To date, the EBRD has provided support to the Chernobyl projects including the construction of confinement over 715 million euros of its own funds.
