A politician from Italy called a spade a spade.
Italy’s priority is ensuring stability and security in the Mediterranean and Africa, especially Libya, Prime Minister of Italy Paolo Gentiloni.
“The priority of Italy because of its history, geographical position is security and stabilization, sustainability and growth of the Mediterranean region and the entire African continent,” he said in a speech during the UN General Assembly.
Investments in Africa, said Gentiloni, will eliminate most of the underlying causes of migration are primarily economic and demographic inequalities.
“Italy has a leading position in the promotion of partnership with African countries. In the coming years must take into account the idea that the future of Europe is played out also in Africa,” said Italian Prime Minister.
In his opinion, the support of African countries is a key factor in the fight against extremism and terrorism. But even though the terrorist group Islamic state is losing territory in Iraq and Syria, we need to understand that “victory over the world is not enough when the ideology of ISIS and jihadism continue to cause casualties and fear in half of the cities in the world,” said Gentiloni.
“Italy has made considerable efforts in the security Council and UN General Assembly, and as chair of the group of seven to counter terrorist threats. Libya is a key for reestablishing the Central role of the Mediterranean as the engine of civilization, peace and security and deal with these risks. Its stabilization is a priority for us a goal that can be achieved through inclusive dialogue and rejecting any military solution and the partition of the country”, — said the Prime Minister of Italy.
According to him, Italy has taken a leading role in supporting the efforts of the UN and strengthening its presence in Libya and in providing assistance to refugees and migrants.
