The Prime Minister of Canada demanded the Pope to apologize to him

During a meeting at the Vatican, the Prime Minister invited the Pontiff to make a similar apology in Canada.

The Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau demanded an apology from Pope Francis over the negative role of the Catholic Church in the canadian schooling system, which, he said, “for many decades allowed the abuse of indigenous children”.

Trudeau met with the Pontiff at the Vatican in the framework of his visit to Italy at the G7 summit, the BBC reports.
Such boarding schools were established in the mid-1880s years. Them forcibly from across Canada took children from aboriginal families to “assimilate them into canadian society”.

The last such school under public pressure, was closed only in 1996.

“I told him how important it is for Canadians to move towards real reconciliation with indigenous peoples and noted that apologies (the Catholic Church) can help this,” said Trudeau to journalists after a meeting with the Pope.
Trudeau, who is Catholic, said that he had invited the Pontiff to make a similar apology in Canada, adding that Francis had inspired his words, because “he is not alien to the idea of social justice.”

In 2015, Bolivia’s, the Pope apologized for the role of the Catholic Church in the oppression of indigenous peoples of the Americas.
