The population of European countries on average, older than residents of other continents. This result came employees of the Berlin Institute for population and development in the sociological study, published on Tuesday, July 25.
The current situation could lead to problems with the payment of pensions and social benefits in the future. According to the researchers, before employers may also occur the problem of finding highly qualified personnel.
“This is very significant because the economy of the XXI century is focused more on highly skilled staff than on the machine,” – said the Director of the Berlin Institute for population and development Rainer Klingholz.
In 2015 the mortality rate in the 28 member States of the EU exceeded the birth rate for the first time since the Second world war. However, according to forecasts, the population of the European Union will continue to grow and will increase from 510 to 529 million people by mid-century. The reason, according to Klingholz is immigration from other countries. In particular, the current immigration crisis and the associated influx of population to the EU has had a positive impact on the demographic situation in the continent.
The study also revealed the demographic heterogeneity of Europe. So, in the countries of Central, Western and Northern Europe in the near future are expected to be relatively high fertility and immigration. Countries in southern and Eastern Europe, on the contrary, threatened by demographic losses.
