Bellingcat has published an interactive map of attacks from Russia through Ukraine in the summer of 2014 despite the fact that Moscow denies its involvement in the war in the Donbass.
“This report is fully researched aspect of the participation of Russian troops in the conflict … Using evidence from open sources, this report attempts to document the full scale of Russian artillery attacks on Ukraine in the summer of 2014,” noted investigators.
During their study, they analyzed border regions and looked for potential positions of attacks and their objectives. All were identified hundreds of relevant sites.
Journalists have conducted research on the territory of Ukraine within 22 kilometers of the Russian-Ukrainian border in the Donetsk and Luhansk region. At the same time, Russia had surveyed the entire territory of the Rostov region adjacent to the search zone in Ukraine.
Investigators searched for the attack with the help of Google Earth images for different dates.
For the period of summer 2014 and artillery units of the Russian armed forces shelled the territory of Ukraine not less than 149 times. Another 130 locations have been identified as likely positions for artillery shelling.
It is noted that the artillery attacks from Russia began in early July 2014 and intensified in August and September 2014.
“Cross-border artillery attacks it is possible to find in the border zone of the conflict in Donetsk and Lugansk regions”, – write Bellingcat.
Considering the frequency, spatial distribution and scale artillery attacks covered in the report Bellingcat, journalists emphasize that these attacks cannot be regarded as random attacks or provocation.
“These attacks can be considered only as military actions of the Russian Federation against Ukraine,” say the investigators.
