The NASA Rover Curiosity in the process of exploration of Gale crater, a vast dry bed of the ancient lake with a hill in the centre, found in the soil residues containing sulfate salt. The presence of these salts suggests that once there was salt lake.
The sulfate salt was discovered in sedimentary rocks, formed from 3.3 to 3.7 billion years ago. Curiosity analyzed other more ancient rocks on Mars and found them in the salts.
Researchers believe that the sulfate salts are evidence of the evaporation of the crater lake in the arid environment of the red planet, and also believe that precipitation is formed later can in the future shed more light on how was the process of drying the Martian surface.
