Vilarinho da Furna, is located in the municipality of Terras de Brown in the North-Portuguese district of Braga.

This ancient village was erased from the cards in 1972 during construction of a nearby dam. Reservoir on the river do homem was filled, and the settlement disappeared under the water. But nothing is eternal — from time to time the reservoir level falls and on the surface appear ghostly buildings of the once prosperous village.

The death of Vilarinho da Furna was sudden, but the indignation of the people lasted for almost two decades. They were unhappy that a large Corporation can so easily take their land for big project, displace people and destroy their homes. Large Corporation in this case was a Portuguese Electricity company, and the largest project was the hydroelectric dam at 125 MW.

Dozens of towns and villages all over the world, repeating the same fate, victims of the energy companies. But, Vilarinho da Furna was not a simple village. It was a 2,000-year-old settlement of Roman times. Although his early history very little is known, to this day still preserved a number of ruins.

The most famous of them are three Roman bridges. Prior to flooding in the village there lived about 300 inhabitants. They kept chickens, cows, pigs, sheep and goats. They had grazing land on the hills and a small area of arable land. Thus, the buildings were built close to each other and had overhanging first floors.

The village was evacuated in early September 1969, the last resident moved out in 1971. Energy company paid these people a meager compensation of only a half Escudo per square meter of land, which at that time was equivalent to one sardine.

For homes and buildings, the rate was fixed at 5 Escudos per square meter. Thus, the villagers took with them almost everything, including the tiles from the roof and leaving only the bare walls.

In 1972 the constraints of the walls were blown up and the river do homem swallowed the remains of Vilarinho da Furna. Oddly enough, thanks to the construction of the dam and subsequent flooding of the village of Furna Vilarinho Yes I still remember it.
