Every year in may, the Rochester becomes lilac capital of the world.
What began one Sunday in may 1898, several thousand people gathered to see the flowers, has become one of the biggest festivals of colors in North America.
Accordingly, this occurs in the flower city.
Highland Park in Rochester, was designed by the famous landscape architect Frederick Olmsted lo. It offers visitors winding trails, hills, some wide open spaces, and over a thousand lilac bushes of different varieties.
The land belonged to the community of George and Patrick Barry in 1850.
In 1892, the scientist, horticulturist John Dunbar planted in the Park 20 varieties of lilacs, some of which are descended from flowers brought to America the first colonists from the mountain ridge balkin. Today, the Park has over 500 different varieties of lilacs, and private 1 200 shrubs.
The first lilac festival was organized here in 10 years after 3000 people first moved to the Park to see the blooming lilac in the spring of 1898, which runs for 10 days in early may. Today, it offers visitors during the festival, live music, exhibition of artwork and crafts, cafes and restaurants, and the competition for the title of Queen of the Lilac festival.
The Park also includes such plants as rhododendrons, Japanese cherry trees and Japanese maples. Through the reservoir in a southerly direction, is the mountain bowl, a statue of Frederick Douglass, one of the most famous historical figures of Rochester, and an amphitheater where every summer performances.
