The largest autocancel: a former Volkswagen engineer has received 40 months in prison

A former engineer in the next five years will spend behind bars.

In the United States on Friday, August 25, the district court of Detroit has sentenced a former engineer of German carmaker Volkswagen AG James Liang, who was suspected of involvement in the scandal with understating of vehicles the emission of harmful gases.

So, Liang was sentenced to 40 months in prison and a fine of $ 200 thousand (which is 10 times greater than the amount requested by Federal prosecutors).

The presiding judge Sean Cox expressed the hope that imprisonment and fine for former Volkswagen engineer will retain other engineers and executives in the automotive industry from such schemes.

During the consideration of this case it was found that the engineer was an accomplice in the scheme to deceive consumers and regulators. It should be noted that Liang had pleaded guilty earlier this year and collaborated with officials from U.S. law enforcement, which is investigating oil companies.

Prosecutors last week recommended that the 63-year-old Liang received a three-year prison term. His lawyers, in turn, asked to sentence their client to house arrest and community service.

The Volkswagen scandal erupted in September 2015, after the us Agency for environmental protection (EPA) revealed that the company installed in its vehicles with diesel engines computer programs that during inspections understate the emission of harmful substances. The actual emissions exceed allowable limits in some cases 40 times.

In March, Volkswagen has pleaded guilty to three counts and agreed to spend in the United States up to $ 25 billion on the resolution of claims from car owners and regulators.
