The words of the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite about the feasibility of the deployment of U.S. Patriot air defense system in the Baltic sea could lead to escalation of tension in the region, said the Director of the Department for nonproliferation and arms control, the Russian foreign Ministry Mikhail Ulyanov.
On Thursday, Grybauskaite attended the military exercises of NATO air forces Tobruq legacy 2017 in šiauliai. In his speech, the Lithuanian President said about the need for a permanent presence of American anti-missile systems in the Baltic States. According to her, this would provide “a higher level of security for all our countries.”
“This statement indicates the continuation of the line Vilnius to the escalation of tension and arms build-up, and not even his, and belonging to third countries in the immediate proximity of Russian borders,” – said Ulyanov.
Ulyanov said that he could not understand how anti-aircraft missiles can contribute to strengthening security in the Baltic region.
