Living in Santa Catarina in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, photographer Diego Huerta (Huerta Diego) learned that is in the immediate vicinity of the protected area called La Huasteca. With special reverence to this territory are indigenous Mexicans, indigenous people of the Marina (self wirrarika, mn.h. wixáritari). Every year they hold the way from his native state of Jalisco in Nuevo Leon.
Diego Huerta became interested in the history of the Marina and soon realized how little about the people information and archival photos. He decided to make them on a series of documentary photographs. Huerta went to 14-hour trip to the mountains of Jalisco, to immerse yourself in local culture, enjoy their traditions, rituals and lifestyle. Of course, he brought along a camera.
Thus began the work on the photocycle of “Indigenous peoples” (Native Nations). Huerta watched the daily life of the Marina, and thought about how many other Mexican peoples, whose history is as unknown. “In Mexico over 57 indigenous cultures, and we don’t know at least half of them. Information is virtually nonexistent,” says Huerta.
