The ghosts of the past: movie review “Abode of shadows” (2017)

Family Marrowbone settled in a secluded family home, hoping to hide from the cruel father. After the unexpected death of his mother, responsibility for his sister and two younger brothers falls on the shoulders of 20-year-old Jack. Some time things have a cohesive family fared well, but then again must face the ghosts of the past are not going to disappear from their lives.

For the creation of the “Monastery of shadows” responds to the same Spanish team that in 2007 gave the audience a mystical horror film “the Orphanage”. It includes screenwriter Sergio H. The film, Sanchez is more like a nice Gothic story read before going to sleep, and fear-mongering it is solely due to the disturbing atmosphere, providing material threats to the heroes only a little screen time. Like “Shelter”, the picture leaves a melancholic aftertaste and is perceived not even as a horror movie or Thriller, and as more prosaic and thoughtful work.

However, from the scenario of small defects Sanchez to escape again failed. Acting team are the young stars of horror: Anya Taylor-joy , we met “the Witch”, with Charlie Heaton investigated the “Very strange case”, with MIA Goth tried the “Medicine of health” and George McKay has changed in the past “11.22.63”. Kast played terrifically well, making each of the characters is almost native to the viewer, which is important for full immersion in the story. Which, moreover, contributes to the exceptionally professional camera work (play with light and shadow, necessary to action-Packed history, are at the highest level) and always getting “the point” soundtrack Fernando velázquez.

In fact, Sanchez took another “Shelter” – heavily reworked in terms of plot, but still easily recognizable. And why invent something new if the tried and tested formula of the fascinating of a visual, dramatic stories, and powerful suspense still works? So for fans of the slow and insinuating Thriller “Abode of shadows” – a must for viewing this year.
