The Russian crews of the MiG-29SMT carry out tasks for further exploration of the terrain and sometimes to perform combat tasks.
The Russian defense Ministry has transferred to the base Hamim (Latakia, Syria) four latest MiG-29SMT delivered to the office of the same Corporation in December 2015.
According to “Kommersant”, the machines sent to the region in order to provide practice to the maximum number of pilots and to test aircraft in combat.
On the same day appeared the first confirmation of the presence of the MiG-29SMT in Syria. In the photo report of the Ministry of defense of the Russian Federation, published on the official website within the framework of the press tour for Russian and foreign journalists in Syria, there was a picture of a fighter of this type. According to sources “Kommersant” in the military authorities, this machine was transferred to Hamim last week of the 116-th Training centre of combat use of the 185-th Center of combat training and combat use of fighter aircraft VKS RF (airfield Privolzhskiy, Astrakhan). Together with it there arrived three similar MiG-29SMT.
Now the MiG-29SMT is the latest of a mass-produced aircraft Corporation “MiG” and, perhaps, the latest military innovations, is still not involved in the operation “Retribution”, the newspaper notes. Until 2014, the military has had 28 of these machines. They got them after the failure of Algeria in 2008 to take these planes from-for claims to quality. Subsequently, they’ve all been fault detection, repair and revision under the requirements of the Russian air force, after which the Corporation “MiG” has received an order for 16 machines (cost about 17 billion rubles). Arrived last week in Hamim four MiGs were transferred to the Russian military in December 2015 on this contract.
According to interlocutors “” close to the General staff of the armed forces, the deployment of the MiG-29SMT in Syria needs to solve several problems at once. First, the crews of these fighters should get combat experience (in may, Russian defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that in Syria it received 86% of the aircrew). Second, even with the roll-out of the aircraft during various military exercises wanted to see how it will behave machine and its avionics on the battlefield.
Yet, according to “Kommersant”, the crews of the MiG-29SMT are employed mainly as problems for further exploration of the area, though sometimes connected to the fulfillment of combat tasks. It is known that at least one of the MiGs was already reset high-explosive bombs ofab-500Kr on the positions of militants of the terrorist group “Islamic state”. Subsequently, the test program of the MiG-29SMT will only grow, according to “Kommersant”, the military can carry out launches of cruise missiles with laser homing KH-29L.
