The famous Comedy “the Mask” could be a horror movie!

A month ago in his review of the film “Away”, I noticed that the horror and humor of the concept is actually much closer than it might seem at first glance. Like many horror movies, Comedy is often built on some form of the absurd, just in some cases, this nonsense scares, and other fun.

Another great example of the kind once famous Comedy “the Mask” (The Mask, 1994), a film directed by Chuck Russell starring Jim Carrey in the title role. It turns out that originally it was supposed to be a horror film!

It is worth noting that in his career Russell was a place of Comedy and horror (the remake of “the BLOB”, 1988), and pure horror (“Nightmare on elm street 3: dream Warriors”, 1987), so that all people, and this guy in the subject understands. “The mask” was his third after these films directorial work – and became the biggest hit in the career of Chuck: with a budget of $ 23 million, the film has collected in world hire 351 million, spawned a sequel, “son of the Mask” (2005) and the animated series. It’s funny that one of the taglines of the film was the phrase “super fun”.

In the center of the story “Masks” was a regular guy, in his hands which got the mask of an ancient deity, wearing the hero turned into a crazy freak with a green face. Sounds like quite a brief synopsis of a horror movie, isn’t it? In fact, in the late ‘ 80s in Italy was filmed a horror film with a similar plot – and this is no joke.

Perhaps it is the fact that a horror movie of this kind already existed and influenced the decision of Russell and company to do the “Mask” is not a horror, and Comedy. But initially, New Line Cinema was thinking about how to make the hero Mask new Freddy Krueger.

The Director says:

This is a great example of a real fight for his vision of the film. We have converted the “Mask” from a horror movie into a Comedy. It was originally conceived as a horror. It was a battle! New Line wanted to create a new Freddy film. It so happened that I saw the original comic, right of adaptation which they bought. And I thought, “It’s really cool but it is too difficult for Freddy Krueger”. The way it was. Hero wore the mask and killed people… It was a really cool black and white splatterpunk.. Then the comics were altered to look like my film, but the original comic was cool, dark and terrible.
But I knew that this film would be too similar to the movies, Freddy.

Nowadays, when every second mastered video editor and has his own YouTube channel, we can imagine what kind of “Mask” could be out of a horror movie:
