The European Union urged the Belarusian authorities to immediately release peaceful demonstrators and journalists who were recently detained and ensure freedom of Association and Assembly.
According to the report, European external action service (EEAS), “recent developments in Belarus, underlined a clear need for a broader process of democratization in the country.”
“Freedom of Association and Assembly must be ensured. Recently arrested peaceful demonstrators, including journalists covering the events (they are – ed) should be released immediately”, – stated in the EEAS.
It is noted that the European Union is committed to a stable, democratic and prosperous future for Belarus, for the benefit of its people, and will continue its work with this end with all interested parties. The EU stressed that the key for the formation of relations with Belarus will be the steps taken by Minsk for the respect of universal fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and human rights.
As reported, on 12 March, Belarusian police detained a number of oppositional activists and at least three journalists in connection with the ongoing demonstrations against the decree of President Alexander Lukashenko “On prevention of social dependency.”
