The lack of reform in the SBU prevents build confidence and further integration of Ukraine into the Western country.
The EU delegation in Ukraine believe that the functions of the security Service of Ukraine should be limited to counterintelligence, counterterrorism and the protection of state secrets.
“If the security Service of Ukraine wants to strengthen cooperation with international partners, it is very important to increase the level of trust at the international level and within the country”, — said the Deputy head of the EU delegation to Ukraine Annika Weidemann during the sixth meeting of a parliamentary-civic platform Thursday, 23 may, in Kiev.
She noted that the lack of reform in the SBU prevents build confidence and further integration of Ukraine into the Western country, in connection with the reform of the security services, in her opinion, must be implemented as soon as possible.
“The functions of the SBU shall be limited to the counterintelligence, counterterrorism and the protection of state secrets. At the same time, the security service should be deprived of the functions in the field of economic and organized crime”, — noted the Deputy head of the EU delegation.
In addition, she expressed hope that the new President and the future composition of the Verkhovna Rada will continue the reform of the judicial and law enforcement sector, which was conducted in recent years. In particular, according to her, it is necessary to improve the system of selection of judges and the introduction of effective criteria for assessing their integrity.
In addition, Weidemann noted that the full reforms should apply to prosecutors.
Among other things, she hopes that the new President of Ukraine will continue to follow the European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
