The EU Council approved the creation of a new program in the field of defense

The EU Council adopted a decision on the establishment of a new programme in the defence sector, the PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation, or “permanent structural cooperation”). This is stated in the message on the website of the Council.

In the program of PESCO attended by 25 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.

On November 13, the Ministers of the 23 member States signed a joint message on Permanent structural cooperation (PESCO) and referred it to the high representative and the EU Council. 7 Dec Ireland and Portugal also announced his decision to join the PESCO.

The permanent structural cooperation requires that the member countries of the EU will closely cooperate in the sphere of security and defense. This constant structure of the defense cooperation will allow to develop a joint defense capabilities, to invest in joint projects and enhance the operational readiness and the contribution of its armed forces.

Program participants also took initial list of 17 projects to be implemented within PESCO.

Earlier media reported that Germany will lead four of the 17 projects PESCO: health service, logistics center, center training missions and service that will create a rapid reaction force.
