Canadian and American Geophysics has revealed new details of the last great extinction, which is associated with the formation of the Deccan traps ( one of the largest volcanic formations on Earth – ed) in India.
The birth of a magmatic region, as shown by scientists, began about 68 million years and caused by volcanic activity not one but two hot spots formed by mantle plumes (hot mantle flows – ed), located beneath the island of reunion and probably the Comoros archipelago in the Indian ocean.
The molten matter from the Earth, which came out estimated geophysicists, volume amounted to 40 and 35 million cubic kilometers, respectively. Volcanic activity is almost completed, as scientists believe, 20 and 40 million years, respectively. To such conclusions scientists came after computer reconstruction of the events in the mantle.
The early emergence of the Deccan traps located on the plateau on the Indian subcontinent and composed of ancient igneous rocks, associated with hot spot in the area of modern réunion island. With the formation of geological features, scientists have linked the extinction, which disappeared about a sixth of all species, including dinosaurs (alternative hypothesis — the fall of a large asteroid).
