The Baltic States want to disconnect from the power grid of the Russian Federation

Disable Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from the Russian network initially planned for 2025.

Estonia supports the synchronization of energy systems of the Baltic States with Central Europe through Poland, Prime Minister jüri Ratas.

The Prime Ministers of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland jüri Ratas, Maris Kuchinskis, Saulius Squirrels and Beata Szydlo on Monday held a meeting in Tallinn in the framework of the meeting of the Baltic Council of Ministers, which discussed the issues of foreign policy, security, energy and transport.

According to Ratas, the topic of energy security it is crucial to achieve clarity in how to move forward on synchronization of energy systems of the Baltic States with Europe.

“Estonia supports synchronization through Poland, if done through the transmission lines in two corridors trails, which is confirmed by a study of the European Commission. The alternative is always there, and it’s synchronization with the energy system of the Nordic countries”,- quotes the Ratas, the press service of the Estonian government.

The Prime Minister noted that the synchronization of energy systems of the Baltic States should ensure a high level of reliability and independence of supply, to ensure the functioning of the electricity market and ensure lower costs for the consumer. “Besides, I see it as an important aspect of energy security,” he added.

Previously, Estonia and other Baltic countries have already said they are preparing to exit from the electricity grid, BRELL to join the energy market of the European Union. The agreement on parallel functioning of energy systems of Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (BRELL) was signed in 2001. It establishes General principles of organization of joint work of the electric ring formed by networks of member countries. The Baltic States intend to synchronize their systems with those of continental Europe by 2025.
