Arctic ice may disappear by the end of the century.
The researchers reported “bad news for people and polar bears”: the release of the Arctic ice could happen in the year 2100.
This will lead to a rise in sea level by several meters, destruction of places of residence of Inuit and other Northern peoples, as well as to the extinction of polar bears, say researchers from the University of Exeter in the UK.
“Our calculations show that the Arctic will completely lose the summer ice cover in the time when global warming will reach 1.5 degrees Celsius,” said James Screen of Exeter University.
Moreover, even if the warming of the planet will be able to stop to the level plus a half of a degree, it still does not guarantee the safety of the ice cover of the Arctic. It is highly likely that the ice will remain just off the coast of Greenland. And the increase in the average temperature of the planet by only 3 degrees Celsius could lead to the fact that the Arctic is almost completely lose their ice by 2100.
