Scientists from Brazil, Germany, Singapore, the UK and the US have predicted the onset of disasters in the Amazonian lowlands. A study published in the journal Nature.
Experts have calculated the index of the DEVI (Dam Environmental Vulnerability Index) for different areas belonging to the Amazonian lowlands. This parameter varies from 0 to 100, its maximum value corresponds to complete destruction of the ecosystem.
The highest values DEVI (80) have on the territory relating to Madeira, the biggest tributary of the Amazon, where it has the “Santo Antonio” and “jirou” — two large hydroelectric power plants. Significantly affected the basins of the Maranon and Ucayali (the value of DEVI is 71 and 61 respectively).
The main factors of ecosystem degradation is considered to be deforestation, diversion of rivers, massive declines in biodiversity and soil erosion.
In the Amazon basin it is planned to position 428 of hydroelectric power plants currently built or being built about 140 such facilities. The pool is the source of 20 percent of fresh water on the planet and a habitat for many endemic species of plants and animals.
