The South Korean government will send through the UN mission funds to support pregnant women and children in North Korea, claiming that they face “serious humanitarian crisis”. For the first time since December 2015 assistance from South Korea will go through the UN.
The decision was taken over concerns about the West and its allies in the region that humanitarian assistance Seoul could undermine attempts by the international community to provide the sanctions pressure on North Korea for its missile and nuclear programme, the source said.
“The government will determine the timing and volume of supplies given the current state of inter-Korean relations”, – reported in Seoul, focusing on the fact that the provision of such assistance to the DPRK should be independent from political considerations.
According to the UN, about 72% of the 24.9 million North Koreans, including 1.3 million children under 5 years and pregnant women, suffer from malnutrition.
