For many years the day when the first snow falls, vanish of a married woman. Fold all the pieces of a mysterious puzzle only the famous detective. He lost sleep, because the next snowfall is inexorably approaching. Director Tomas Alfredson is spine-chilling Thriller based on the bestseller of the same name by Norwegian writer Jo nesbø.
Sounds nice, isn’t it? Snowman maniac kills young women during a snowfall and leaving notes to the police officer Harry Hole. What could turn out gorgeous horror or an intense Thriller, because the Scandinavians are renowned for good crime movie with an unusual story. A serial killer, who was believed dead, is back on the hunt, and the detective Harry Hole, together with the investigator Katrina bratt, trying to catch the psychopath, until there are new victims because “the snow swirls, flies, flies”.
So what really happened film adaptation of the seventh book of the writer Jo nesbø, which has long been a leader in American and British charts and brought the author international fame?
Attention, this review may be spoilers! Who wants to watch this movie, not read, to have patience and to watch in the cinema. Good luck. And Yes, you said below is only my opinion and may differ from yours.
The film is shot in a perfect Scandinavian style. Slow movie with long panoramic views on top of forests, mountains and roads. The same slowly acting and the main characters. No matter what they do, everything goes very slowly. Of the genre can immediately throw out the “horrors” and leave the “detective”. Detective for internal use in their own country and forbidden outside of it as this boring, that is shown on the screen, can only afford the Norwegians. And if you close your eyes, you do get the audiobook. For 35 million budget, that’s one hell of an expensive audiobook.
Detective Harry Hole, was once a famous COP (which he is so famous for, the film is never explained), and now just an alcoholic, which is kept at work for old merits. Drink where he wants, sleeps where you sleep, and why it is suffering, no one bothered to tell the audience. Again. Just the first half hour we watch the incomprehensible gestures of the protagonist, who walks slowly down the street, slowly looking in Windows of houses and lots and lots of smoke. I think if you look at the person who goes against the movement of the escalator in the metro, will be interesting.
After half an hour the story comes alive. Disappeared the woman. Well how lost: was at home, and then not. And the snowman in the yard smiling in the window. “And to hell with it” thought once known police officer Harry Hole. – “Husband decided to change.” And then again another 15 minutes slowly wanders the streets and decides their family Affairs, which include the woman and her son Oleg. The detective looked as Oleg plays hockey, then ate with him in a café and then long and thoughtfully looked out the window where it was getting dark night. And lots and lots of smoke. Apparently, they had love, but we have not explained where this woman with a child, and why do they have such complicated relationship. Well, there is, what are you stuck.
From this drive, just the blood from his eyes. We’ve the button “rewind”?
45 minutes later the ice is still moving, gentlemen of the jury. Arriving at work, the detective learns that he was given a partner that will help guide the case of the missing. Katrina bratt says that a long time ago were identical with the cases of murders of women, and everything happened in the snow. And to the audience became more interesting, show flashbacks, when 9 years ago the same as he is, “known to police” (and the same alcoholic), played by Val Kilmer, is investigating the murder of women. The conclusion is that the snowfall in Norway go every 9 years.
A small digression. From the Director:
Val Kilmer brought to the role of unimaginable pathos, charisma and warmth.
I wonder how much Kilmer paid to of him it is written, for appearing on screen for a total duration of five minutes. After a debilitating illness Kilmore lost beyond recognition. And it was only a large head on a thin neck. Pity – that’s what I ispitivali, looking at once beautiful and healthy actor.
But back to our sheep. Kilmer, according to the cops, he committed suicide. But Katrina bratt doesn’t believe in it, and for good reason. Along with Harry Hole she will investigate a new murder. The second hour of the film is dynamic, but it does not save the picture. There is a lot of secondary characters that should confuse the viewer in search of a villain psychopath. But result was something different. The secondary characters are dumb idol that arise in the frame for show and just disappear without a trace. For example, a businessman who rented girls for the night. This businessman (played by George. K. Simmons) for a long time shown a close-up on the lush receptions, tell us who he is, but, falling under suspicion, the businessman suddenly drained from the plot without explainable reasons. The question hung in the air: the Fig was to fence a bunch of little around this fellow, then to remove it from the frame. Cut out this character, like the Appendix – the film has not lost anything. As stated, the detachment did not notice the loss fighter…
But let’s talk about maniac (beware of the spoiler in the spoiler!).
The first murder at the end of the first hour of viewing was murder… of a chicken.
Then moved on to women (someone will say that they are one and the same :)). Happened – neither good, nor bad. Such a horror show in daytime for Housewives on cable TV. The maniac and his motivation to leave misunderstanding. The confusion that is happening on the screen at all difficult to understand. To kill women because their children are not native fathers? Or because these women have children, but not fathers?.. And and then there is snow and snowmen?.. Fuck! The logic of a psychopath and still is not disclosed. But most importantly – final.
What is the final? Epic clash for the sake of which removed the whole movie. In “the Snowman” maniac just… drowned. He was not killed. He did not become a victim of a fair revenge. He just walked to his victim, gun in hand, the ice beneath his feet cracked and he drowned. DROWNED, CARL! And the movie ended.
