Scientists told about the consequences of the rapid melting of the permafrost

The disappearance of the sea ice leads to significant changes in the landscape

The thawing of permafrost in the Northern regions of Siberia cause the appearance of mysterious giant craters.

The disappearance of the sea ice leads to significant changes in the landscape, adversely affecting the ecology of the region and its infrastructure. Climate scientists fear that it could lead to more tragic consequences. Such changes can seriously threaten people.

“The last time the permafrost melted 130 thousand years ago. It is a natural phenomenon associated with changes in earth’s orbit, said Oxford University Professor Gideon Henderson. But what is really unprecedented is the rate of melting. Melting, which happened 130 million years ago, has been happening for thousands of years. Now we see that melting occurs over decades or a century”.

Henderson says that people are witnessing incredibly rapid thawing of permafrost.

In ordinary normal conditions, permafrost adjusts the amount of emitted carbon, taking and keeping most of it by burning fossil fuel people. This emitted carbon affects the rate of warming in the future.

2014 found several large craters, one of which is longer than 50 feet. There are several hypotheses of formation of these craters. All of these hypotheses one way or another, associated with the temperature rise in the region.

“People in areas of permafrost depend on frozen soil, as it is based on infrastructure — said Henderson. — When the earth is melting, crumbling railway, road collapse, fall into the ground of a building… It’s already happening”.

Such changes can create problems for large industrial zones, oil and gas fields.

The government and companies, in particular those dealing with extraction of gas, are sponsoring further research in order to prevent a serious disaster.
