Researchers from Alanskogo Institute of brain research in Washington found that brain aging and cognitive decline associated with accumulation of plaques and formation neurofibrillary nodes, as well as changes in gene activity. About it reported in a press release on the website MedicalXpress.
The researchers analyzed samples of brain 107 older people aged 65-90 years. Staining nervous tissue using the yellow dye of thioflavin T allowed to identify a large number of amyloid plaques of peptide beta-amyloid associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease, and twisted protein fibers (nasobiliary nodes).
Their accumulation has been correlated with dementia in old people, but not always in patients with amyloid plaques develop dementia.
Analysis of gene expression in cells of the hippocampus and the neocortex, which is expressed by the rate of formation of the RNA products showed that dementia contribute to age-related changes in activity of DNA. To the genes associated with brain aging were those that are involved in the functioning of mitochondria — organelles that supply cells with energy.
