In 20 million years lake Baikal appears of the ocean.
Scientists of the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy. V. S. Sobolev (IGM) in Novosibirsk have reconstructed the history of lake Baikal and predicted its geological future.
“In the earth’s crust, right in the middle of Eurasia, is a huge rift Baikal rift zone. Gradually it expands and, if not change the geodynamic environment, after 20 million years the largest continent will again be divided into two parts, and the place of lake Baikal will be a new ocean,” the message reads.
The results are published in a special issue of the journal Gondwana Research in article of leading researcher of the laboratory of geoinformation technologies and remote sensing IGM Sergey Krivonogova and senior researcher at the laboratory of magmatism and ore formation of IGM Inany Safonova.
Previously, such full review of the Baikal rift zone has not been done – geologists examined her private parts, and synthesis work focused only the Central zone of this region – the basin of lake Baikal.
It is also noted that the mountains around the lake continue to grow an average of 5-6 millimeters per year, 3-4 mm deepening of the bottoms of the depressions.
