Scientists can not say exactly when the eruption will occur.
An international group of scientists from Italy and the USA found out the location of the magma bubble under the Phlegraean fields is a volcanic Caldera near Naples (Italy). According to seismologists, molten rock under the city-port of Pozzuoli and create pressure, which could contribute to the eruption of catastrophic proportions. About it reported in a press release on the website Phys.org.
In 1980-ies in the area of the Phlegraean fields there were a number of weak earthquakes due to contact with magma in the depths of the Caldera of the volcano. Scientists have determined that liquid melt has risen to a depth of 1-2 km beneath the earth’s surface, having met in its path the rock formations. The eruption not happened, but the hot rocks caused the deformation of the lithosphere and an increase in the pressure, which caused the tremors. Now magmatic centre is under Pozzuoli and maybe Naples, but also has spread towards the sea.
Scientists can not say exactly when the eruption will occur, however, emphasize that the volcano becomes more dangerous. In this case there is the probability that magma will find a way somewhere on the bottom of the sea and the disaster will not happen.
The Phlegraean fields super eruption occurred about 40 thousand years ago and probably caused the onset of the volcanic winter. The ash covered an area of over 1.1 million square kilometers.
