An international team of scientists found that an eruption shield volcano Takahe in Antarctica, lasted for 192 years, and provoked the onset of the last interglacial epoch. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The eruption of the volcano occurred approximately 17.7 thousand years ago, around the same time in the southern hemisphere, where Antarctica led to significant climate change. In particular, the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
“Rich in Halogens eruption created the stratospheric ozone hole over Antarctica, which is similar to the modern ozone hole has led to large-scale changes in atmospheric circulation,” — said co-author Joseph McConnell. According to him, in the southern hemisphere, it launched a shift from ice age to maslennikovo. “The probability of a match is negligible,” said McConnell.
To such conclusions scientists have come, having analysed the ice core extracted from a depth of more than 3.4 thousand meters in 350 kilometers North of the Takahe.
Previously, researchers from the University of Edinburgh (UK) discovered beneath the ice of Antarctica 91 the volcano.
The height of mount Takahe more than 3.4 thousand meters and is located on the Land Marie Byrd in West Antarctica.
