Scientists have made an unexpected statement about the goldfish

Goldfish cannot survive without oxygen due to the alcohol.

Scientists have discovered that goldfish can survive without oxygen due to the alcohol that they produce.

The fish produced two types of similar enzymes necessary in the processing of glucose. As in other animals, carp and goldfish participates in this process and pyruvate dehydrogenase complex consisting of several enzymes.

It converts molecules of pyruvic acid, the end product of the oxidation of glucose. At oxygen “starvation” the body of the carp and the goldfish is beginning to develop a dehydrogenase, another enzyme that promotes the release of acetaldehyde. With the help of another enzyme, alcohol dehydrogenase, this compound is converted to ethanol. Alcohol is excreted through the gills, but a portion remains in the body of the fish.

In “oxygen-free” periods, the concentration of ethanol in the blood of carp can exceed 50 mg per 100 ml.
