Scientists told about the purpose of black and white coloring pandas.
Scientists from the University of California stated that the sharp, contrasting color pandas was the result of a compromise: it helps an animal to hide in the woods and in the snow, to camouflage and to communicate with each other.
The researchers ‘ findings were published in the journal Behavioral Ecology.
In the study, researchers compared the color of giant pandas with the color of wool 195 other terrestrial carnivorous mammals, and 39 subspecies of bears. They were compared with each other and with the landscape typical of the habitat of these animals.
The authors came to the conclusion that between the color of the skin and external temperature, there is no connection. There is no trend towards the emergence of a black “points” in the eyes of those types who have to protect eyesight from the glare of mountain snow. However, scientists have discovered the relationship between color and snow cover.
In their opinion, the contrasting color of pandas it performs protective function. White-black it could be the result of a compromise between the need to mask the bears in the snowy mountains, and Alpine forests. Animals constantly wander near their boundaries, where they are waited by dangerous predators – leopards.
Black points and ears are used to communicate with other pandas. Presumably, pandas perceive themselves black points and black ears as a rather vivid detail and seek to show them in all their glory opponent, but when courting a partner, on the contrary, unable even to cover their legs to look not so aggressive.
