Only humans and great apes was considered capable of truly planning. But a new study published in the journal Science, described how the birds could easily choose the instruments for further use and can cooperate with people exchanging items for future consideration, reports The Independent.
They also avoided smaller rewards to get the best, even if it was delayed in time. As stated by researchers from the University of Lund (Sweden), this study shows that the crows “make a decision about the future beyond the current sensory contexts”.
The experiment proved that the birds were surpassed orangutans, bonobos and chimpanzees especially. That task seemed more like a test of intelligence than a habit, and it turned out that in planning their actions, the ravens are better than four year old children. – The fact that the ravens are the “intellectuals” of the bird world, has long been known.
They are almost the only birds that produce tools (branches make hooks that get grubacic), and transfer these skills to the next generation, says Andriy Bokotey, President of the Western Ukrainian ornithological society. – It is proven that they are capable of taking difficult decisions to make, have a complex behavior, their language. The Raven brain is one of the largest among birds. This bird is not only with instincts – he understands that and why does. In addition, the ravens have their own language – they don’t just give signals of danger, as do most birds, but also able to communicate with each other. For example, they coordinate their actions while hunting (crows are omnivorous, including those they prey on small animals). Known cases when flocks of crows were herded hares. Also, the ravens have their gestures, and they’re used to communicate various items. By the way, ravens are great imitators – they can even mimic the voice of a man.
