Scientists spoke about previously unknown facts about the ancient Irish ritual.

Scientists have discovered that the ancient inhabitants of Ireland conducted the ceremony “deconstruction of the body” of the deceased before burial, in order to strengthen the connection of the community with his soul.

The researchers analyzed bones found in 1911 in Carrowkeel, which is one of Europe’s largest burial mounds of the Neolithic period. For a long time the remains were thought to be lost until they were discovered in 2001 in the archives of the University of Cambridge.

“Bones date from between 3500 and 2900 years BC”,” says Sam Moore, member of the research team.

An international team of scientists analyzed the bones of 40 people found in seven tombs. All of them were cremated, so the experts had studied as burnt remains, and preserved.

“We found on the bones traces of stone tools on the spot of the tendons and ligaments in major joints such as shoulder, elbow, hip, and ankle,” explains the Professor of anatomy johnny Gerber.

This, according to him, indicates that in primitive societies was distributed complex burial ceremony, during which special attention was paid to the “deconstruction of the body”. The researchers found that similar traces of stone tools are often found on the bones of the same era.

“The attempt to understand the reasons why these ancient communities dismembered the body, was one of real intrigue of this study. In past societies pedigree had more to do with group identity. This, it seems, had a real importance in Neolithic Ireland,” suggests Sam Moore.

Re-analysis of the bones revealed to scientists a high level of complexity and diversity of funerary rites. Such rituals, as experts believe, played in ancient societies a special role, as it allows to maintain spiritual connection with the ancestors.
