Scientists were able to unravel the mystery of the so-called dinosaur-Frankenstein, whose body, as it seemed at first, consisted of parts of bodies of different unrelated types.
According to a new study, the found animal is the missing link between the herbivorous dinosaurs, such as stegosaurus and meat-eating dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus. Thanks to the opening becomes clearer the evolution of the detachment of dinosaurs called bird-hipped.
The results of the study were published in the journal of the Royal society of London.
Graduate student, University of Cambridge Matthew Baron said in an interview bi-Bi-si, that, according to his research, Dino-Frankenstein was one of the first ornithischian, the most famous representatives of which are Triceratops and stegosaurus on the backs of which sported bony growths.
“We could not understand how began to develop bird-hipped body, because they are so different from all the other dinosaurs. They have so many unusual characteristics. For 130 years, as we became aware of the bird-hipped us to the present moment it was not known how looked the first representatives of this order,” – said the scientist.
Dinosaur-Frankenstein (or filesavr) was found two years ago. This finding is very puzzling paleontologists. His hind legs were like those of Apatosaurus, as the pelvis of stegosaurus, and front legs like a Tyrannosaurus. Scientists did not understand where his place in the family tree of dinosaurs.
In the conventional system of a family tree, it was believed that the bird-hipped nothing to do with other dinosaurs.
Paleontologists believed members of this order something atypical. But, according to the research of Baron, the results of which were published in March in the journal Nature, bird-hipped were closer in kinship to carnivores, such as Tyrannosaurus Rex than previously thought.
In rethinking the family tree, thanks to the researches of Baron, dinosaur, Frankenstein, the riddle turned into the missing link.
“Now, when we believe that the ornithischian carnivorous dinosaurs, like Tyrannosaurus Rex, are connected, filesavr fits in place between the two groups. It equally combines their features. Now in a new tree, everything fell into place,” said the Baron.
The new version of the family tree, called the tree of the Baron, not only a permutation of dinosaurs different places.
The new version sheds light on how different groups of dinosaurs were divided and began to evolve in different directions, adds the co-author of scientific work, the Museum of natural history Paul Barrett.
“Filesavr is at the beginning of the split, and I hope, when we begin to understand more of its features, we will know which factors of the process was the key,” he added.
