For a long time experts explored the phenomenon of generosity. A new study conducted in Switzerland, showed that generosity makes us happy. The study involved 50 people. Participants pledged to give $ 26 a week for 4 weeks.
Half of the participants were asked to spend the money on other people, and the others could plan how they will spend it on herself. In fact, none of the groups didn’t receive money and not spent. After the volunteers reported that have to do with the money, their brains were scanned. During the MRI, participants answered questions in which their interests clashed with the interests of those who benefited from their generosity.
The researchers monitored activity in the area of the brain associated with altruism and social behavior, the area of the brain related to happiness, and part of the brain involved in the decision-making process. The group asked to spend the money on others felt happier than those who had to spend money on themselves.
The level of happiness did not depend on the amount of money. In addition, the researchers found that the brain region associated with generosity, stimulate the area of the brain related to happiness.
