With the help of latest technology, American scientists have identified the cause, which began the extinction of the superorder of reptiles – dinosaurs.
American scientists by computer simulation found that an asteroid caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, filling the atmosphere of sulfur and carbon dioxide.
Natalia Artemieva of the planetary science Institute in the USA and Joanna Morgan of Imperial College London conducted a computer model of the collision to find out how serious the consequences could be from the asteroid strike.
Scientists were able to simulate the situation, noting that the point of impact for today is the Chicxulub crater near the tip of the yucatán Peninsula in contemporary Mexico. It is likely that the collision of an asteroid with Earth occurred at speeds of at least 1 kilometer per second at an angle of 60 degrees.
The publication notes that previous computer models of the Earth’s collision with the asteroid did not take into account the speed of movement of gases. However, the impact probably threw about 325 billion tons of sulfur and 425 billion tons of carbon dioxide. And this is three times more sulfur and three times less CO2 than thought so far, and about 10 times more than all global emissions for 2014.
Because of the above mentioned reason, the temperature of the planet fell to 26 °C. the Temperature was on average below zero and kept at this level for at least three years after the collision. In the result of the first cold snap reduced the number of plants, then extinct herbivorous dinosaurs and then the carnivores.
