The search for the ancient city was carried out from 2010
Archaeologists from the national heritage Institute of Tunis and University of Sassari in Italy found a Roman city of Neapolis, who disappeared in the tsunami around 1700 years ago.
Discovery includes the entire streets, monuments and about a hundred tanks intended for storage of haruma – fermented fish sauce. The latter was a very popular seasoning in Ancient Rome and Greece and, probably, its production played an important role for the economy of Neapolis.
“This is a major discovery, proving that Neapolis was the largest in Ancient Rome, the center of production of haruma and salted fish,” says the head of archaeological expedition Munir Fantar.
Meanwhile, the search for the ancient city was conducted in 2010, however, to find ruins, researchers were able recently.
Historians believe that Neapolis was under water in the earthquake of a magnitude of eight points. They note that after a disaster, some parts of the island of Crete moved ten meters.
