Scientists have discovered two new “super-earths”

An international team of scientists found that the planet K2-18b and her roommate are the supersense.

They are at a distance of 111 light years from Earth and orbit the star, which is part of the constellation Leo.

It is known that the planet K2-18b lies in the habitable zone of their parent stars, i.e., on the planet’s surface water can exist in liquid form. There is a possibility that the planet may be a kind of “enlarged copy of the Earth.”

“What we were able to measure the mass and density of the planet K2-18b, in itself, was a significant event, however, you can open a new planet in this system – it was a great success and has caused a storm of emotions,” said the study’s lead author Ryan clothe of the Institute for studies of exoplanets University of Montreal.

To determine whether K2-18b to rocky planets or gas giants, the scientists needed to know its mass; knowing the mass and radius of the planet, calculated on the fluctuations of the radial velocity of the star, scientists have determined the density of the planet.

In the process, scientists have discovered a signal with a frequency of 39 days, resulting from the rotation of the star. We have also identified a signal with a frequency of 33 days, resulting from the rotation around the K2-18b and the signal with a periodicity of 9 days. After investigating these signals is suggested that the system includes one more planet, probably super-earths.

“When we first sent the data in the table, we tried to find out what it is. We had to make sure that the signal is not just noise, and we need to do a thorough analysis to validate it. After checking it turned out to be another planet,” says Katie.

While the planet K2-18b added to potentially habitable, the second planet – K2-18c is too close to the red dwarf, so apparently its surface is hot, which excludes the possible existence of life on it.
