In many ancient cities you can take a walk only with scuba gear. The ruins of the sunken cities archaeologists find less than of the city, hidden underground. That’s why the next discovery was so valuable.
Italian and Tunisian scientists have discovered a huge number of ruins under the water near the city of Nabeul in northeast Tunisia. Studies have shown that it is the remains of the city called Neapolis, which was almost completely eroded from the face of the earth tsunami of 1700 years ago.
At the bottom of the Mediterranean sea, experts saw streets, monuments and about a hundred stone baths that were used for the production of a product called garum. This is fish sauce, which was very popular in Ancient Rome and ancient Greece.
Researchers believe that the production and export of haruma was an important economic factor in the development of Neapolis.
The team notes that studies in the region was conducted in 2010, but only now the favorable weather conditions allowed to find an ancient city.
“This discovery allowed us to assert with confidence that Neapolis was an important center of production of haruma and salted fish, perhaps the biggest in the whole of Roman civilization. Probably, the noble people of Neapolis were owe their wealth to it garumu”, — says head of the research group Pantar Mounir (Mounir Fantar).
The area of the ruins remaining from Neapolis, is 20 hectares.
This city was founded in the fifth century BC; in Greek the name means “new city”. He several times passed into the possession of the one, the other States in wars. Neapolis was an important city of the North African region because it had direct access to the sea.
A written record of Neapolis by Roman historians, very few, probably because the city hasn’t always remained subordinated to the Empire (and during the Third Punic war in 149-146 years BC and was occupied by the side of the Carthaginians). So archaeologists hope that the ruins will tell them more about the city.
