An international team of researchers used the Hubble telescope to search for evidence of the existence of water in the atmosphere of planets TRAPPIST-1. Traces of water can be another proof of the probable existence of life on these planets.
“Around the star TRAPPIST-1 revolve the seven planets. Scientists have registered a leak of hydrogen at least two inner planets in the system are receiving the maximum amount of ultraviolet radiation. This means that even on these planets was water,” – says the publication.
The researchers came to the conclusion that the two inner planets of this system lost a lot of water – about 20 times more than now on Earth, while the three outer of which lies in the habitable zone — much less 3-4 of the earth’s ocean. Thus, these three planets could have saved enough water to sustain life.
Scientists say that these results are not final. For confirmation, you must wait for the commissioning of the space telescope James Webb, which will be launched next year.
